Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Briel EG281APG Multi-Pro Stainless Steel Pump Espresso Machine with Built-In Coffee GrinderCustomer Review: Costly but effective Summary: 4 StarsWe've had our second Briel Multi-Pro for over three years now - bought the original unit at Costco and the second "online" (at another source other than Amazon) and they'be both been "useful" units. Yes, they are a bit expensive compared to some other manufacturers but I very much appreciate the appearance of the unit as well as the quality of espresso this unit makes... y'gotta love that crema!! And I truly love "blending" my own bean combinations and enjoying the fresh-ground flavor the side-by grinder accommodates.
Unlike some of the other reviews I've read here, I very much like the machines and I've had more than a few expresso machines in my "coffee drinking lifetime". The only limitation I might mention are those complaints of "unavailable parts", from local sources.... although when I've needed them, I've found that there are parts available by simply doing a "google" on "Briel Multi-Pro parts".
The "800" source that the reviewer from Canada mentioned, is helpful and they guided me to a source here in Denver with one phone call; but to-date, I've needed only two parts in over six years so I cannot speak for the unfortunates who had unfortunate luck with their machines....
Description of Briel EG281APG Multi-Pro Stainless Steel Pump Espresso Machine with Built-In Coffee GrinderThe MultiPro Stainless & Black Espresso Machine comes equipped with a 15-bar pump pressure, which no doubt produces a savory espresso with perfect crema every time. It is ESE adapted for use with ground coffee or individual coffee serving pods and features a Turbo Jet Frother (a Briel exclusive) which produces an abundance of dry steam for a thick milk froth to be dolloped atop your cappuccino or latte. Its AquaStop No-Drip System prevents dripping and the need to "bleed" the machine of leftover water. Two thermostats regulate the coffee cycle and steaming process for the pump, with a third "just-in-case" thermostat located on the pump in the event of abnormal or continuous use. The stainless steel boiler distributes heat evenly and an "OK" light signals when the machine is ready for brewing or frothing. Push button switches allow for ease and convenience and a removable 2.5-L water reservoir can be filled from the back. There is also a removable overflow tray for easy cleanup. The machine includes a built-in coffee tamper and measuring spoon as well as a VHS instructional video and a 10-Year Pump Warranty (exclusively Briel). Briel's Mutli-Pro EG281 espresso machine is backed by the company's 30-plus years in the coffee business, and it shows--this model's focused on presenting caf?-quality espresso and cappuccino to the home user. To get this high quality, the EG281 has a number of extraordinary features, starting with the attached grinder. The grinder's many settings, from very fine to coarse, account for the many types of beans available. When using different beans, it should be adjusted to find the ideal grind; the adjustment is also necessary to find the right grind in differing temperatures and humidity levels. After the proper grind is found, it places exactly 7 grams, the required amount for one cup of espresso, into the holder. This Briel also gives a lot of control over the final product, due in part to its Auto Espresso Flow system. This system lets the coffee strength be set according to taste--from a strong, Italian-style short cup to a larger, less-robust brew. The espresso is brewed at the required 190 degrees F, and the machine has 15 bars of pump pressure. And it's speedy, making two cups in about 35 seconds. It also makes good cappuccino, thanks to its included frothing wand, which has its own temperature control. Some other nice features include a CremaMaster filter, which provides a richer crema on each espresso, and an exterior water lever indicator. In shining stainless steel and sturdy black plastic, this machine won't shame any counter. It has 1,360 watts of power and measures 16-1/4 by 12-1/4 by 10 inches (length by height by depth).--A.J. Rathbun Editor's note: This item may arrive with water inside from the manufacturer's pressure test. This is a normal occurrence and doesn't point to a problem with the machine.
